How to use Perio plus mouthwashes?
Depending on the formula, our mouthwashes reliably remove bacterial plaque from teeth, gums and tongue. The proper use of mouthwash should be guided by your dental professional.
Perio plus mouthwashes are intended for special situations and targeted oral care, not for long-term daily use. Reasons could be post-oral-surgery treatment, gum disease, or if your mouth just needs a tad more protection. Depending on their formula, Perio plus products contain chlorhexidine (CHX)—a trusted antibacterial ingredient—and Citrox®, a natural bioflavonoid with an antibacterial effect. There is also a CHX-free formula: Perio plus zero offers gentle, antibacterial microbiome-friendly support for those who prefer or require a (long-term use) solution without chlorhexidine.
Please follow the instructions provided by your dental professional. However, there are some basic tips that apply to almost any daily mouthwash.
When to use it
It is recommended to rinse after brushing, according to the instructions of your dental professional as a preventive measure in the case of diseases or after surgical procedures. Rinse with the recommended amount (usually 10–15ml) for 30 to 60 seconds.
Rinse for a minute
Dental professionals recommend leaving the mouthwash in the mouth for at least 30–60 seconds, then spitting it out. If you want to get it just right, you can use a timer.
Don’t rinse with water
Rinsing your mouth with water after using mouthwash is counterproductive as it washes away both the active ingredients and the mouthwash flavour.
Wait half an hour
The time between mouthwash use and your next meal should be at least 30 minutes. This is the only way to achieve maximum effectiveness.
How long to use it
Each Perio plus mouthwash has a different usage recommendation, depending on its CHX concentration. The higher the CHX percentage, the shorter the recommended duration of use. However, just as we mentioned above: follow the instructions provided by your dental professional.
Dental-pro Tip
Using a CHX mouthwash immediately after brushing can impair both fluoride uptake and CHX activity—especially if your toothpaste contains anionic ingredients such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) or monofluorophosphate. To ensure that toothpaste and mouthwash work effectively, wait at least 30 minutes after brushing before rinsing.
Mouthwash is just for fresh breath
Mouthwash is definitely much more than just a quick fix for bad breath. It is a powerful tool for maintaining oral health and can offer a range of benefits that go beyond just freshening your breath. But let’s take closer look.
Therapeutic vs cosmetic mouthwash
Commercial or cosmetic mouthwashes are products that are primarily used to freshen the breath and prevent caries. A medicated or therapeutic mouthwash, on the other hand, is a concentrated solution with antibacterial or antiseptic properties that reliably removes bacterial plaque from teeth, gums and tongue, and accelerates regeneration and healing.
Chlorhexidine (CHX)
Chlorhexidine or short CHX is a chemical compound primarily used as an antiseptic commonly found in mouthwashes. CHX ensures that the mouthwash isn’t only effective against bacteria, but also against fungal diseases of the oral mucosa. Mouthwashes also feature antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and other valuable ingredients such as fluoride, hyaluronic acid, or Citrox®, a bioflavonoid that supports the antibacterial properties of chlorhexidine. Dental professionals can recommend our mouthwashes for post-operative or therapy-accompanying use after dental interventions or for treating oral diseases such as gingivitis or periodontitis.
This toothpaste was made to boost your mouthwash
You may be wondering which toothpaste to use in combination with your mouthwash. Let’s have a look.
Research shows that SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate), a common foaming agent in many toothpastes, can interfere with CHX-based mouthwashes and reduce their antibacterial effectiveness. So, if you’re using a mouthwash for extra oral health support over a certain period, make sure to choose your toothpaste carefully. Using an SLS-free toothpaste ensures that the active ingredients in the mouthwash remain effective—and that both products work in harmony to protect your teeth and gums.
Ideal toothpaste
Of course, we developed the optimum solution for this problem. Meet Perio plus support—this toothpaste does not interfere with the effect of chlorhexidine (CHX). On the contrary: it intensifies the mouthwash’s properties as it also contains CHX. It helps maintain gum health and moistens the tissue in your mouth, thanks to hyaluronic acid. This toothpaste contains neither alcohol nor the foaming agent SLS, so it won’t irritate the delicate gums and mucosa. You can use it instead of a regular toothpaste each morning and evening for a month or as instructed by your dental specialist.
By the way: it tastes great thanks to Citrox®. And good to know, too: all Curaprox toothpastes are free from harmful ingredients like SLS, alcohol, and triclosan. They also come with a low RDA and therefore have no abrasive properties.
